Palmer Wahl Celebrates 175 years

2011 marks the 175th year of business for Palmer Instruments Inc., part of Palmer Wahl. Starting in 1836 as the “L.T. Wells and J. Foster Mathematical and Philosophical Instrument Makers” in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company became the “James Foster, Jr. Company” in 1852. The need to improve kerosene safety in the 1850s led Foster, Jr. to develop the “Foster Automatic Oil Tester,” a closed cup design instrument known for being the first thermometer manufactured in the United States. As the most accurate instrument available, the Foster Cup became the standard for inspection of oil and petroleum products in Ohio, Michigan, and other states. Becoming the “R.P. Palmer Company” in 1872, Palmer specializes in mechanical temperature and pressure, joining forces with the digital temperature specialists at Wahl Instruments in 1997 to become its current business incarnation, Palmer Wahl. Our focus on precision and quality has afforded us 175 years of serving industry in the United States and across the world. Second generation company President Stephen Santangelo said, "We thank our customers who have relied on us to provide accurate and reliable products over the years."
